Could you share your love of stories and reading with parents, staff and children?
Time Commitment: You could do all this in just around 16 hours a term, by visiting local early years childcare settings in Ipswich, with another volunteer.
The volunteer's role would be to go into each early years setting (there are about 8 in each area) at least once a term to distribute book-bags to parents of funded 2-year-olds, and run a session for parents and children to support communication and reading with another volunteer.
This is a great opportunity for someone who has worked in teaching or family support to use their skills.
The commitment would be about 2 hours each time, about 16 hours each term, during school term times.
We are looking for three volunteers to work with early years settings, one in each area - South-West, South-East and North-West Ipswich. .
They would also need to collect feedback on the impact of this work to support future funding bids.
Each volunteer will receive training and support as necessary.

Who we are
Let’s Talk Reading (LTR) has been set up to radically improve poor reading skills for disadvantaged children and parents in Ipswich. It is a voluntary project funded through grants, with a strong Project Board, a part time paid co-ordinator and a small number of volunteers.
Why LTR was set up
One person in six in the UK struggles to read, and these low literacy skills impact adversely on every area of their life. Around 15% of adults in England would not pass an English GCSE and have literacy levels at or below those expected of an 11-year old. Many children are still leaving local primary schools without adequate reading skills to cope with secondary education.
A child without good reading, writing and communication skills can’t succeed at school, and as an adult they will probably be locked out of the job market. Poverty doubles the likelihood of literacy failure by the age of five and literacy failure multiplies the likelihood of poverty.
Parents and carers who are confident readers are more likely to help children become confident and enthusiastic readers. Conversely, where parents struggle with reading, they are unlikely to be able to assist their children to read.
The Let’s Talk Reading project was set up in 2016 with the aim to eradicate low literacy in Ipswich by 2025.
Let's Talk Reading focuses on helping early years settings, schools and community organisations to recognise that all children need good reading skills, and works with parents and children to build communication skills and reading at all levels. Early Years settings and schools have identified the need to support some parents who are struggling to read to become more confident in talking and reading with their children, improving their own literacy skills.
